UTAH COUNTY — Heavy rainfall in Utah County and Salt Lake County caused flooding in homes and damaged streets Friday, officials said.

Salt Lake and Lehi fire departments responded to at least 12 incidents of flooding in basements.

In Pleasant Grove, lightning struck a power pole at 1800 North 100 East.

The Lehi CERT team was called out, but the call was canceled a short time later because the flooding was drained sufficiently.

Lehi dispatched two companies, each consisting of a fire engine and an ambulance, to respond to flooding in homes in the northern part of the city. Lehi Fire Battalion Chief Kim Beck said 5 to 6 inches of water were reported in some basements.

"It just rained really hard for about 30 minutes," Beck said. "It was pretty intense."

The water for an entire Lehi cul-de-sac drained around one home near 800 East and 2200 North. The rush of water cut deeply into the gully behind the house, washing out part of the garden and the retaining wall.

Lehi police confirmed that public works crews were sent to help clear debris out of drains, but the drainage system still had troubles with the rainfall.

Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said Friday's floods were light in comparison to years past.

"We haven't had any debris flows or mudslides in the area like we have had in the past," he said. "They came in years where areas had fires earlier in the year."

Six Salt Lake fire crews responded to an area between 1300 South and 2100 South near 2300 East where flooding from strong rains had impacted homes, said Salt Lake fire spokesman Jason Asay.

Flooding was strong enough to damage roads near Roxberry Road and Sherwood Drive and even moved manhole covers in the area, he said. Rain also swept a lot of debris into streets and blocked gutters and drains.

Crews also responded to a blocked drain affecting traffic at 2200 S. Foothill Drive.
