21K girls, women gather for LDS General Women's Session

SALT LAKE CITY — Twenty-one thousand Latter-day Saint women and girls filled the Conference Center for the first session of General Conference Saturday evening.

The session was broadcast in Church meetinghouses throughout the U.S. and beyond and on the Church's website.

This meeting is for women, teenage girls and little girls as young as 8 and this evening, they heard about the Lord's love for them, no matter their age, married or single.

The First Presidency and women leaders of the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary participated in the meeting.

A video presentation paid tribute to a teacher who has no children of her own.

Sister Rosemary Wixom, the Primary General President, spoke of the divinity within each person. "Those sitting around you right now in this meeting need you. The world needs you, and your divine nature allows you to be his trust disciple to all his children."

Sister Linda Reeves, of the Relief Society General Presidency, offered words of warning about life's temptations.

"Seductive romance novels, TV soap operas, married women and old boyfriends connecting in social media, and pornography. We must be so careful, dear sisters!"

In another video, a group of women expressed their gratitude for a faithful friend.

Sister Carol F. McConkie of the Young Women General Presidency spoke of individual worth and service. "Through test and trial, even through fear and in the midst of despair, we have valiant hearts. We are resolved to do our part. We are here to serve a righteous cause."

President Uchdorf explained that the Savior, Jesus Christ in parables so he decided to talk of an elderly aunt who taught a young girl about true happiness.

"When we love God, we want to serve him. We want to be like him. When we love our neighbors, we stop thinking so much about our own problems and help others to solve theirs."

Sarah Grate, of Pleasant Grove, says she loves being surrounded by her sisters "I love hearing what the bretheren have to say to us when we're all together with each other. It makes you feel really strong and you can feel the spirit there."

Now these Latter-day Saint women and girls will join the men and boys in preparing for more Conference sessions next weekend.
