PROVO — A BYU starting cornerback faces two misdemeanor chargers in connection with a dispute at a local apartment complex.

Michael Davis, who was listed as the starter at boundary corner on this week's depth chart, faces charges of assault and riot stemming from a July 29 arrest at a local apartment complex. Davis was charged with assault, a class A misdemeanor, and riot, a class B misdemeanor, for his role in a dispute over a parking space, according to charging documents.

Another individual sustained "minor, visible injuries," a Provo police spokesperson told the Deseret News. Davis was not taken into custody immediately following the incident.

The junior from Glendale, California, appeared in Provo's 4th District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court scheduled an initial trial-by-jury date for Oct. 1, according to court documents.

Davis played in all 13 games as a sophomore at boundary corner, where he racked up 43 tackles and six pass breakups, with a season-high nine tackles against Nevada on Oct. 18. The former Glendale High School offensive standout at wide receiver came to BYU over offers from Hawaii, San Diego State, Southern California, and others before being moved to cornerback during his freshman season.

A BYU official said the football program is aware of the citation and it has been addressed by the university. It is not known if Davis will travel with the team to its season opener Saturday at Nebraska, but he remains a started on BYU's first projected depth chart. Dayan Lake, a freshman from Northridge High, is the backup at boundary corner.

The charges are the second misdemeanor offense by a BYU football player this summer. Linebacker Sione Takitaki was charged with two counts of misdemeanor theft by University Police in July, and head coach Bronco Mendenhall confirmed he will be suspended for the Nebraska game.
