With August on its last legs, the world is ready to begin the final four months of 2015.

For film lovers, this is the season we put our Hollywood blockbusters on the shelf and focus on serious matters. We're like students going back to school, readying our brains for intellectual consumption and our hearts for "Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens," which opens Dec. 18 at a theater near you. Okay, so it's not a perfect simile, but you get where this is going.

So what's on the schedule for this cinematic award season? Let's break it down by month:

September

'The Visit' (PG-13)

M. Night Shyamalan returns to the big screen with a small, shaky-cam-documentary style horror piece that will make you never want to visit your grandparents. Trailer here.

'Black Mass' (R)

Heaps of pre-buzz for the Johnny Depp bio-pic about Boston's most notorious criminal/FBI informant. Trailer here.

'Everest' (PG-13)

Another based-on-true-events movie hits next month, this time focusing on the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Jason Clarke, this looks like an experience best viewed at your closest IMAX. Trailer here.

'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' (PG-13)

The sequel to James Dashner's popular YA novel, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" hits theaters Sept. 18. Trailer here.

'Hotel Transylvania 2' (PG)

The first family friendly movie of the fall season is "Hotel Transylvania 2." This follow-up to the 2012 Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg monster movie focuses on Dracula's half-human, half-vampire grandson. Trailer here.

October

'The Martian' (N/A)

Left behind on Mars, Matt Damon's only chance for survival is math and science. Trailer here.

'He Named Me Malala' (PG-13)

On her way to school, Malala Yousafzai was shot three times by a member of the Taliban because she openly advocated a girl's right to education. This documentary tells her story, and follows the cause she champions today. Trailer here.

'Pan' (PG)

Yes, yes you did need another Peter Pan story. Director Joe Wright's take on the classic story stars Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried. Trailer here.

'Steve Jobs' (N/A)

A fragmented telling of the life of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Directed by Danny Boyle (127 hours), "Steve Jobs" stars Michael Fassbender and Seth Rogen. Trailer here.

'The Walk' (PG)

Another experience best viewed in IMAX 3D, "The Walk" tells the true story of Philippe Petit's wire-walk between the Twin Towers. Netflix subscribers can also check out the documentary "Man on Wire" to learn more about the amazing story. Trailer here.

'Jem and the Holograms' (PG)

While it has the same name as a very popular, classic cartoon, this seems like a completely new take on a rock star named Jem. Trailer here.

November

'The Peanuts Movie' (G)

Snoopy and the gang are back for some nostalgic fun. The trailers aren't giving up a great deal about what's in store, but with Charles M. Schulz's son Craig and grandson Bryan writing the story, it has to be good … right? Trailer here.

'Spectre' (N/A)

Daniel Craig is back for his fourth adventure as the smooth talking British super spy. This latest chapter of the franchise is decorated with an arachnid looking bullet-hole logo, so it's pretty much guaranteed to be good. Trailer here.

'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2' (PG-13)

While some rumors are circling about the movie franchise living on after this next chapter, "Mockingjay — Part 2" will wrap up the story from the books, and will probably be the last time we see Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. Trailer here.

'Creed' (N/A)

Rocky Balboa trains Apollo Creed's son, Adonis Creed. Starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. Trailer here.

'The Good Dinosaur' (N/A)

It's really interesting that Pixar is releasing its dinosaur movie closer to award season than the critically well-received "Inside Out." Does it have faith that its little dino-movie will be a better fit for Best Animated Picture, or was it afraid it wouldn't perform well against the summer blockbuster line-up? Trailer here.

'Victor Frankenstein' (PG-13)

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star in yet another take on the Frankenstein story — this time told from Igor's perspective. Trailer here.

December

'In the Heart of the Sea' (PG-13)

Ron Howard's film, based on an event in 1820 that inspired the novel "Moby Dick," was supposed to be released earlier this year. Whether it was moved back because of problems, or because it was so good they wanted it fresh on Academy voter minds is something we'll need to wait until December to see. Trailer here.

'Sisters' (R)

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are together again, this time as sisters throwing a house party. Hilarity will probably ensue. Trailer here.

'Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens' (N/A)

J.J. Abrams and Disney revisit a galaxy far, far away with some original cast members and writer Lawrence Kasdan from "The Empire Strikes Back." Oh, and this movie is so highly anticipated that its taking over every IMAX screen in North America for a month. Trailer here.

'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip' (N/A)

"You know, for kids." Trailer here.

'Concussion' (PG-13)

Will Smith and Alec Baldwin star in "Concussion," the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu's discovery of the football related degenerative brain disease, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

'Joy' (N/A)

The cast of "Silver Linings Playbook" are back together again with director David O. Russell to tell the story of the woman behind a powerful family business. Trailer here.

'Point Break' (N/A)

A remake of the Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves 1991 hit. Only now the surfers are extreme sport athletes. Trailer here.

'Snowden' (N/A)

Oliver Stone's latest current event commentary, "Snowden" tells the story of Edward Snowden and stars Shailene Woodley and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Trailer here.
