MILLCREEEK — A con artist is contacting Millcreek residents and telling them to wire $500 to a financial account to avoid an arrest warrant for failing to appear for jury duty, Unified police said Wednesday.

In the past month, residents have been targeted by a man who speaks with a Southern accent and pretends to be a sheriff's deputy, said Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell. The man tells his victims they failed to report for duty on a specific date and are required to either meet in front of a judge, wire their fine to an account, or send the $500 using a money order, Bell said.

The victims have been threatened with arrest if they don't meet those requirements.

"The Unified Police Department would never ask anyone for money over the phone or ask anyone to wire us money. Courts (are) responsible for reconciling outstanding fines as is the Salt Lake County Jail in their own regard," Bell said.

Anyone who may have been called as a part of this scam is asked to call police at 801-743-7000. If the fraudulent call is in progress, residents are asked to contact Millcreek precinct detectives at 385-468-9620.
