SPANISH FORK — Heavy rain in Utah County led to a mudslide on U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon Sunday afternoon, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
According to UHP Trooper Jared Cornia, significant precipitation in the area led to part of the mountain coming loose and sliding over all lanes of traffic as well as the Union Pacific rail line in the canyon.
The Utah Department of Transportation and crews from Union Pacific opened one lane of traffic, but the incident caused major delays.
UHP estimated all lanes would reopen before nightfall.
The railroad in the area is currently closed, and there is no estimate for its reopening.
Cornia added reports of people being trapped in the slide were unfounded. No one was injured in the incident.
