SALT LAKE CITY — When you think of being an artist, you probably don't think of crisscrossing the country selling your wares. But for these creative brothers, the two go hand in hand.

Scott and Joe Rawlings are both the brains and the brawn behind Fullgive, a leather shop that specializes in aesthetically pleasing and extremely functional wallets. They have taken their work to Arizona, Texas, Colorado and Washington, and will be in California at the end of the month.

"We've been invited as one of 20 Etsy sellers to represent Etsy at the NYNow trade show in New York next month," Scott Rawlings said. "It's a pretty big deal, and we are so excited to be a part of it."

Their vision was born from a love of art and a desire to be their own boss.

"Art and shop classes were my favorite times in school," Scott Rawlings said. "Other than that I haven't had any formal art schooling — I just kind of go for it. I choose to be an artist and business owner for the lifestyle it allows."

His brother Joe studied graphic design at SUU, but found that he preferred working with his hands rather than a computer. His first job out of school was working as a display coordinator for Anthropologie, building the store's signature — and sometimes elaborate — merchandise displays.

For the past six years, the Rawlings brothers have expanded their creations from belts to wallets to dopp kits to knife holders to bags.

"I am super proud of our new wallet line," Joe Rawlings said. "I am a fan of less is more and clean lines, which these wallets speak to while having some great details. They really represent our best work."

For Scott Rawlings, leather represented a way to combine his passion for handmade art and a way out of a career path he wasn't satisfied with.

"Leather is just a vehicle for me to be creative," he said. "I could honestly work with anything and have fun, but I really got into leather based off of sleepless nights and re-occurring thoughts."

Inspired by experimenting with their passions, the brothers have collaborated while pushing each other to improve the quality and design of their leatherworks. Their advice for anyone who has dreams of taking their artistic vision to the next level is simple: do it.

"You gotta just go for it," Scott Rawlings said. "Don't over-analyze things."

"Love what you do," Joe said. "Work hard and never look back."

Closer to home, Fullgive will be a part of Craft Lake City Aug. 7 and 8 in downtown Salt Lake City. If you'd like to donate to their Kickstarter, click here.
