RICHMOND, Cache County — A 50-year-old Franklin, Idaho, man was treated at a Logan hospital Saturday after his car, which was being towed by a van, was hit broadside by a cement truck carrying a full load.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, Steven Bassett was behind the wheel in his sedan, which was being pulled by a van driven by Debra Leishman, 43, of Wellsville, shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday.

The two vehicles stopped at stop sign at 100 South and state Route 91, then attempted to make a left turn onto S.R. 91 to head south. Leishman told troopers that she saw a cement truck traveling north on S.R. 91, which she surmised was turning onto 100 South, but it was not, UHP Lt. Lee Perry said.

When Leishman's and Bassett's vehicles attempted the left turn, Bassett's car was hit by the northbound cement truck, striking the driver's side of the vehicle, spilling cement onto the car and roadway. The intersection was blocked nearly an hour while rescuers extricated Bassett from his car and removed cement from the road.

Neither Leishman nor the cement truck driver, Kyle Jordan, 48, of Preston, Idaho, were injured, Perry said.

The cement truck was fully loaded, which resulted in the spill, Perry said. However, Jordan's efforts to slow the truck as much as possible lessened the impact, he said.
