SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police searched for four men following a shooting at a South Salt Lake Maverik store early Friday morning.

A dark-colored Toyota and a Mercedes were parked in front of the Maverik at 3300 South and West Temple around 3 a.m., according to Sgt. Gary Keller of the South Salt Lake Police Department.

Surveillance video shows two men were standing near the Toyota when two other men approached on foot from the southeast. The four people apparently knew each other, Keller said.

"This was not a random act," Keller said. A heated conversation took place and one of the men on foot fired three shots from a gun, Keller explained.

The men who had approached on foot ran from the scene northbound on West Temple. The Toyota drove away.

When police arrived, they found three shell casings and blood on the ground.

"Obviously somebody was struck by gunfire," Keller said.

Officers notified local hospitals to be on the lookout for anyone arriving with gunshot wounds.

Police in West Valley City pulled over a Mercedes that matched the description from the Maverik store. They arrested one person for investigation of charges unrelated to the shooting. Keller said the two people in that Mercedes are not connected to the Maverik shooting.

Police still want to talk to the people inside the Mercedes that was at the gas station. Anyone with information can call South Salt Lake dispatch at 801-840-4000, Keller said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
