COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — City officials have closed the children’s slides at Mountview Park “due to health and safety concerns.”

Dan Metcalf, Jr., a spokesperson for Cottonwood Heights, said officials were worried about the effects of direct sunlight on the slides and making them too hot. The playground equipment would not be accessible to the public until further notice, he said.

The KSL Investigator team recently did a story about the dangers of hot slides and found that some slides can reach nearly 200 degrees.

“The decision to close the structures did not come lightly, as the city weighed the safety of children over the wide popularity of the park,” said Metcalf in a press release.

The park itself will remain open as city officials work to find a safe solution to protect children from the hot playground equipment.
