SOUTH JORDAN — An elderly woman was injured Friday night after aerial fireworks tipped over and launched into her face.
At least two others sustained minor injuries from the multi-shot fireworks deployed into a small crowd watching a fireworks show at Legacy Retirement Residence in South Jordan, according to South Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Reed Thompson.
With a laceration and burns on her face, the woman was transported to the Utah University Burn Center. Thompson said she was in stable condition, but taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The others who were injured refused care, Thompson said.
After completing an investigation, fire officials said the fireworks were legal and being lit appropriately.
"Whether there was a manufacturing flaw associated with device, I’m not sure, but they were operating within the legal restrictions," Thompson said.
No further investigation was being conducted, Thompson said, but all fireworks incidents are reported to the state fire marshal's office.
He said at the end of fireworks season, the information will be used to determine whether certain fireworks shouldn't be used because of danger or malfunction.
