PROVO, Utah (AP) — The Provo Utility Company smokestacks — landmarks for almost 75 years — will remain a bit longer after asbestos delayed their demolition.

Provo Utility assistant director Scott Bunker tells the Daily Herald of Provo that he expects the stacks to come down within the next 12 to 18 months depending on weather and federal permits that are required because of the asbestos.

Last year the Provo Municipal Council Energy Director reported that the utility company's campus was unstable. It was determined that a new campus should replace the old.

The last time the stacks were used was during an energy emergency in 2000. The cost of power went from eight cents a kilowatt hour to 30 cents a kilowatt hour. Even then, there were concerns about the stacks' safety.
