SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man who went outside his apartment to see if anyone needed help after he heard gunshots was shot himself after exchanging fire with a group of men.

The incident happened about 11:20 p.m. Monday at 1601 W. 400 South. Salt Lake police say the victim was in his apartment when he heard gunshots in the parking lot. Several men were reportedly fighting. Investigators later found at least one bullet hole in a parked car.

The man, 36, grabbed his handgun and went outside where he saw a gray Chevrolet Impala with an unknown number of men about to drive away, said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy. The man and members of the group exchanged words, and a man in the back seat fired four to five shots at the victim, striking him once in the shoulder, Lougy said.

The man returned fire but was unsure Tuesday whether he hit the fleeing vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for an injury that was not life-threatening.

The other men involved the shooting and the initial fight were believed to have gang ties, according to police.
