SANDY — A Sandy man was arrested in a disturbing case of domestic violence after police say he punched, kicked and stabbed his girlfriend and tried to force her into an oven while holding her against her will for hours.

Joseph Anthony Castellanos, 31, of Sandy, was arrested about 2 a.m. Friday for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated cruelty to animals and intentional criminal mischief.

The assault began about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, said Sandy Police Lt. Victor Quezada. Castellanos, the woman's live-in boyfriend, arrived home "and was upset because (the woman) had not visited him while he had been at work," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

Over the next 2 ½ hours, police say Castellanos punched the woman several times in the face and body, kicked her in the ribs, threatened to kill her, stabbed the top of her head using a kitchen knife causing a quarter-inch wound, held a second knife to her throat, stabbed her head and body at least five times with a fork, urinated on her, struck her with a belt and buckle, poured hot sauce and ranch dressing on her and tried to put her in an oven.

The woman struggled with Castellanos when he attempted to lift her into the oven and got her feet inside, Quezada said. It was not immediately known Monday if the oven was on. Castellanos also heated up a pot of water on the stove and intended to scald her, according to police.

In addition, Castellanos stomped and kicked at the woman's dog who was hiding under the table and yelping, Quezada said.

Castellanos also caused an estimated $2,250 in damage to a laptop and at least two cellphones, the report states. The woman was eventually able to call 911 using a cellphone she hid in the bathroom. When officers arrived, they found the woman "bloody and bruised," Quezada said, adding that Castellanos tried to convince the woman to tell police she was assaulted by someone else at a TRAX station.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor in Friday's incident. Detectives were also investigating a possible prior aggravated assault against the woman on June 12.
