PROVO — If former BYU standout Tyler Haws’ NBA future doesn’t pan out, the Alpine native already has a backup plan.

Haws has signed a contract offer from Obradoiro Clube de Amigos do Baloncesto, a team in Spain’s top-tier Liga Endesa.

The contract, which was first reported by Provo’s Daily Herald, includes opt-out clauses if Haws is drafted Thursday or he signs after joining an NBA summer league team before July 31.

“The preparation for this has been going on for some weeks,” Tyler’s father Marty Haws told the Herald. “The initial offer was very favorable to Ty’s interests, so naturally we indicated we were willing to explore it further. After investigating more about the team, looking at film and communicating with the executives there, we’re comfortable with the coach and the system they run. This situation is a good fit for Tyler and it will be a great opportunity for him if he ends up there.”

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Haws graduated from BYU as the program’s all-time leading scorer. He poured in 2,720 points in four years with the Cougars, averaging 19.6 points per game. He had workouts scheduled with Utah, Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, Golden State, Brooklyn and Memphis prior to the draft during a busy summer that also includes his upcoming marriage to former BYU gymnast Summer Raymond in July.

Obradoiro, which is also called Rio Natura Monbus Obradoiro for sponsorship reasons, finished the 2014-15 season in 12th place of 18 teams in Liga Endesa, including top-tier perennial powers Real Madrid and FC Barcelona Regal.

Obradoiro is based in Santiago de Compostela, in the autonomous region of Galicia.

Haws would join local hoops product Jaycee Carroll in Liga Endesa next year. The Utah State alum helped Real Madrid to the Euroleague title last season and is expected to return to the club in 2015-16.

Haws would also join former BYU teammate Brandon Davies in Europe. The Provo High alum recently signed a contract with Elan Chalon in France after a brief NBA career with Philadelphia and Brooklyn.
