HURRICANE — A man sustained serious injuries Saturday morning when his experimental plane crashed near Hurricane airport, police said.

At approximately 10:49 a.m. Saturday in the area of 2050 South and 800 West in Hurricane, witnesses reported seeing an aircraft take off from the Hurricane airport and make two circles before going down, according to Sgt. Brandon Buell of Hurricane City Police Department. It appeared the plane was having mechanical problems which caused the engine to stall as the pilot was attempting to land at the airport from the north, Buell said.

The plane went down in a field, hitting a fence and traveling approximately 150 feet before stopping, according to Buell. The pilot, a 62-year-old male, was the only occupant of the plane. He sustained serious injuries, including a laceration to his head and a possible fracture to his leg.

The pilot was transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center. The plane has extensive damages and appears to be totaled, according to Buell. An investigation of the crash is underway and the FAA has been notified of the incident.
