OGDEN — It’s the 10th annual Utah Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire, and Utahns are dressed to the nines for the big event.

“It’s way more fun dressing up,” said Sonora Brannum, a visitor at the event. “There’s so much amazing stuff here being sold.”

Event representative Mandy Brown says the festival has a Renaissance theme with a fantasy twist to it.

“It’s set to encompass the fantasy realm from mythology and history,” said Brown.

The event showcases several vendors, jewelry, swords, performances, jousters, Gypsies, mermaids, fairies and various other things found in the Middle Ages.

Visitors also have a plethora of activities to choose from and unique food to eat.

“There’s a lot of cool food where you can get the same sort of beer and meat that you could get back in those times,” said Tyler Young, a character at the event.

Young also works with the Intermountain Renaissance Art Foundation, a nonprofit organization that teaches history and art.

Young says beyond the fun and costumes there is a greater cause and purpose.

“We also have an anti-bullying program,” said Young. “We partner with the Renaissance Festival but we also go to schools to teach kids dressed in costumes because kids relate to that.

Part of the events’ proceeds will go to an anti-bullying campaign.

Young says they focus on King Arthur and his “seven knightly virtues” and how to use those virtues against bullying.

Other organizations also benefit from the event, including Pack and Pounce, a program designed to rescue animals, and Legacy Initiative, a program designed to help the homeless.

The Utah Renaissance Festival and Fantasy Faire is an annual event every spring. The final day of the festival is Sunday, May 24. It is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
