HEBER CITY — The historic B-17G Sentimental Journey is one of 50 of that model left worldwide and it’s coming to Utah on June 8.

The aircraft was dubbed the “Flying Fortress” by airmen during World War II, according to a Commemorative Air Force news release. The iconic plane carried a heavy defense of 13 50-caliber Browning machine guns and an 8,000-pound bomb load. It is considered by many to be the most recognized aircraft of WWII, the news release said.

Now, only about 50 of the B-17G aircraft exist worldwide and approximately only 10 are still flying.

The Sentimental Journey was restored and maintained by the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and will come to Utah June 8-14.

“The Utah Wing of the Commemorative Air Force is hosting this event to honor the heroes who fought in WWII and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships and aircraft enabling the United States and its Allies to achieve victory,” the organization said in the news release.

The week-long commemorative activities will include WWII military reenactments, a 1940s swing dance, tours of the CAF Utah Heber Valley Museum, flights on the Sentimental Journey and military aircraft and vehicle displays. Several WWII veterans will also be available for questions.

Flights and tours on the Sentimental Journey will be available each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are $5 each and B-17 rides are $850 in the cockpit and $425 in the back. People can call 385-230-5994 to make a flight reservation.
