NORTH LOGAN — A man who fell 80 feet in Green Canyon Thursday afternoon has died, officials said.

Cache County Search and Rescue and the Logan Fire Department responded to an area about a half mile from the mouth of the canyon called "Boy Scout Cave" at 3:06 p.m. where the 23-year-old man fell while free climbing, according to Lt. Mike Peterson, Cache County Sheriff's office division commander.

The victim was pronounced dead on scene after sustaining a severe head injury, according to Chief Deputy Matt Bilodeau with the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

A helicopter was initially called, but it was called off due to the severe lightning and heavy rain that started falling in the area at the time.

The victim went into cardiac arrest as paramedics were working on him, Bilodeau said.

Search and Rescue team members secured the victim on the side of the mountain, but were called off the scene due to the lightning strikes in the area. They later returned when the weather calmed down to bring the victim's body off the mountain, Bilodeau said.

The victim had been climbing with three others, one of whom called 911. The investigation is still ongoing.

The identity of the victim is yet to be released pending notification.
