CEDAR CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will break ground on a new temple in Cedar City late this summer, officials announced Monday.

The groundbreaking service is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, at 300 S. Cove Dr., according to a release from the Church’s First Presidency. Attendance at the event will be by invitation only, however the services will be broadcast online to stake centers within the temple district.

Church President Thomas S. Monson first announced plans to build the Cedar City Temple two years ago during the April 2013 general conference. Many members in Cedar City travel to St. George to attend the temple and were thrilled at the news they wouldn’t have to go so far to worship.

“The issue was not about time or miles to drive,” Cedar City resident Maureen Einfeldt told KSL two years ago. “The only problem (if there was one) was that of space and accommodation for the thousands of faithful LDS members of southern Utah and beyond who wanted to attend the temple regularly.”

Residents and local leaders will receive more information on the groundbreaking in the coming weeks, according to the release. When construction is complete, the temple will be opened to the public for viewing before its official dedication.
