WEST HAVEN, Weber County — A midnight traffic stop led to an arrest in West Haven Monday.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper performed a traffic stop on a vehicle near 21st Street and 1100 West just after midnight, according to Sgt. Brandon Whitehead. He said the trooper was unable to verify the driver’s identity and became suspicious.

When the trooper approached the vehicle for a second time, the driver allegedly put the car into gear and took off. Joshua Ellis, 25, drove down 1100 West until he hit a dead end, at which point he jumped out of the car while it was still rolling, according to Whitehead. He said Ellis threw a handgun into a field and fled on foot.

Ellis was taken into custody after a containment with K9s and officers was set up. Whitehead said it took about an hour and a half to locate Ellis, who was arrested on suspicion of evading and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, in addition to outstanding warrants.

A female passenger was also taken into custody. Whitehead said she was hiding bullets matching the gun they recovered. He said investigators also found forged money on the suspects.
