SOUTH SALT LAKE — A fire apparently fueled by cottonwood seeds spread to four adjacent properties Monday.

But thanks to the quick actions of South Salt Lake firefighters, damage was contained mostly to yards and structures outside the homes, with only some cosmetic damage being reported to actual houses.

The fire started about 11:30 a.m. along a dead end street near 135 W. Silver Lane, just off 3300 South. How the fire started was still under investigation Friday afternoon.

South Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Jason Nicholl said it appeared that seeds from cottonwood trees that lined the fences caused it to spread to several yards.

On Wednesday, about 28 people were displaced from a fourplex, 4533 Dean Drive, West Valley City, after a fire got away from a man allegedly lighting cottonwood seeds on fire. That fire caused between $250,000 and $300,000 in damage.
