MAGNA — Two westbound lanes closed on I-80 Monday afternoon after two school buses full of high school students were involved in an accident, officials said.

A cement truck was making a U-turn into a construction area near Saltair at about 3:30 p.m. After one bus reduced its speed, the following bus rear ended it, according to Sgt. Chad Hecker with the Utah Highway Patrol.

The Box Elder School District buses were traveling westbound to Grantsville High School for a choir competition. Hecker believes there were close to 100 people between the two buses, he said.

The cement truck was making an improper U-turn and the second bus was following too closely behind the first, Hecker said.

Three females were transported to an area hospital for minor injures, Hecker said.

Hecker believes citations will be issued, but the investigating officer is still making determinations, he said.

The roads near the Saltair interchange were closed for about an hour. The roads are now reopened, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Traffic was slowly going at the on-ramp coming from Saltair, Hecker said.
