SPANISH FORK — A motorcyclist died Saturday when he collided with a pickup truck while attempting to pass it near Utah Lake, police said.

The man, 31, and another person were headed west on motorcycles toward Sandy Beach on Spanish Fork River Road when the accident happened about 3 p.m., said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

"Sandy Beach is an area kind of the southeast part of Utah lake, south of the Provo boat harbor by several miles and west of Springville and Spanish Fork," Cannon said. "(It's a) popular area for people to go out and play in the water some, ride ATVs, have a campfire, picnic, that kind of stuff."

The two motorcyclists came upon a westbound pickup truck in the road. The driver of the pickup truck made a right-hand turn as the driver of a Honda dirt bike attempted to pass him on the right, according to Cannon.

The motorcyclist collided with the pickup and was thrown. He hit a tree and suffered serious head injuries. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, he said.

Witnesses and the riding partner initiated CPR. A deputy continued CPR when he arrived on the scene.

The man was transported by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where he later died. His name was not immediately released Saturday until family members could be notified.
