SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of runners ran their hearts out Saturday at the annual Salt Lake City Marathon — and the winner this year was a Utah native.

The fastest time for the 26.2-mile run was accomplished by Mike Nelson, who ran the race in 2 hours and 33 minutes.

"I'm not in the greatest shape I've ever been in, so it was a struggle, but I got it," Nelson said.

Many runners ran in groups of friends or to support foundations, or they just ran to accomplish a goal they had set for themselves.
