PROVO — After completing a historic career at BYU, former Cougar guard Tyler Haws is attempting to make the NBA and fulfill his dream of playing professional basketball. Here are some of his strengths and weaknesses and my prediction about his future.

Strengths

Mid-range jumper: If any part of Haws’ game is NBA ready, it’s his mid-range jumper. Haws was absolutely lethal with the basketball from 10-15 feet out. It is becoming increasingly rare to find guys who can make mid-range jumpers, so Haws’ ability might get him a second look.

Improved range: During his time at the Y, Haws became a legitimate 3-point threat. He slowly developed confidence in his ability to hit from downtown, and in his last season, he shot 147 threes — by far his highest total in his college career. NBA teams are always looking for a guy who can come off the bench and bury 3-pointers, so Haws’ ability to do so could make him attractive to teams.

Character: By all accounts, Haws was the type of person coaches dream about. Throughout his collegiate career, Haws was an excellent role model as he was a terrific team player, a quality leader and stayed out of trouble. With so many NBA players having serious behavioral issues, finding a guy high in character would be a breath of fresh air to NBA executives.

Weaknesses

Lack of elite athleticism: Haws had just enough athleticism to get by in college. He often struggled to find his own shot when guarded by faster guards and had to rely on screens to compensate. The NBA is full of athletic guards that Haws would have to deal with every game.

Poor defense: BYU’s defense was awful this year, and Haws was part of the problem. Haws appeared to reserve most of his energy for the offensive side of the ball. His and his teammates’ lack of focus and effort on defense was a primary reason the team did not go farther in the NCAA Tournament. Fellow BYU superstar Jimmer Fredette has seen limited playing time in the NBA due to his lack of defensive ability, and the same could happen to Haws.

My prediction: Haws was a terrific college player, but I doubt NBA scouts will give him much attention. Haws probably will not perform terrifically on measurable qualities like speed and agility, which will keep scouts at bay. However, I believe he can have a fantastic career in Europe if he chooses to do so. His game fits better overseas.
