SALT LAKE CITY — Dani doesn't know exactly what it is about the music.

"I don't know, I've been singing for a very long time — ever since I was little," she said.

For the 15-year-old, singing is therapeutic; and at her voice lesson Wednesday, she felt comfortable. But sometimes in life — like in song — notes fall flat, words are forgotten, and things don't always go according to plan.

"We were going to see my grandparents up in the mountains of Colorado," she remembered.

They never arrived.

"Glass just flew passed me," she said.

Dani, though only 3 years old at the time, survived the car crash. She still has vivid memories of that day.

"I remember going to the hospital and waiting for my mom, but she didn't make it," Dani said.

Since then, Dani's life has been a series of ups, downs and many moves in between.

"I still struggle every day with what's happened to me," she said.

She's lived in the Utah Foster Care System for the past four years and admits it's not always easy.

"I could go home today and they could call me and say, 'Oh, by the way, you're moving today so pack up all your stuff,'" she said.

Dani said she thinks of getting adopted every day. She wants to be loved and accepted inside and out.

"I like my piercings and my hair color," she said, of her brightly colored hair. "I guess it's just a way to express myself."

Dani hopes her future includes a career in photography, cosmetology or music, and she hopes her family will be there for it all.
