TAYLORSVILLE — The Furniture Warehouse building that had been vacant for four years in Taylorsville was demolished Thursday to make way for new buildings that will house several national tenants.

Crews tore down the 110,000-square-foot building at 1836 W. 5400 South Thursday morning to make way for multi-building redevelopment that will include Five Guys Burger and Fries and Beans & Brews Coffee House, along with several other restaurants and retailers.

“I’ve lived here some 59 years and remember coming here as a young boy. This is a great day for Taylorsville. It’s the end of the era of ‘Road Redwood,’ you might say,” said Taylorsville Mayor Larry Johnson, referencing Furniture Warehouse’s commercials.

The 16-acre development is the first part of a 100-acre plan that includes land across the street that will unfold over the several years, according to Wayne Harper, assistant to the mayor for business and economic development.

“Thirty years ago, this used to be the place to be for retail on the west side of the county,” Harper said. “It’s a rebirth, it’s reborn and it’s going to be exciting. So watch what’s happening here in the next two to five years.”

The plan to make the corner vibrant, according to Harper, includes fast-casual restaurants, a 12-screen movie theater and a 100,000-square-foot indoor entertainment center.

“I think citizens (and) the people of Taylorsville have been longing for development down here with restaurants and stores,” Johnson said.

“Keep our work and business here in Taylorsville. Keep the money here,” he continued.
