FARMINGTON — A video has emerged, claiming to show the “first test run” of Lagoon’s new roller coaster, Cannibal, and just watching a test run may make you lose your lunch.

Now, I’m a moderate roller coaster fan who delights in both the anticipation as I tick to the top and the thrill of the actual ride, but I also have a tipping point where the intensity of the ride turns the fun into torture.

After watching this video, this ride could go either way for me. Maybe it’s the idea of a 116 degree, “beyond vertical” drop that’s making me leery. Or perhaps it’s the corkscrew that immediately reverses direction. Or maybe, just maybe, I’m heading toward middle age and that inevitable phase where one shakes one’s head and wonders about youths and what they find entertaining today. This includes fist shakes to the sky, of course.

Whatever my tipping point criteria, I’m cautiously looking forward to trying out the ride that will hurtle me along at speeds of up to 70 mph for 2.5 minutes.

Cannibal took five years to develop and build at an estimated cost of $22 million. Lagoon also released a video in February with a more up-close view of the finished track.
