RICHFIELD, Sevier County — A 97-year-old Richfield man who began his radio career in 1955 is still on the air, playing a mix of music you probably won’t find anywhere else.

Joe Gentry, who produces a show he calls “Musical Masterpieces” on Richfield’s KSVC 980 AM Richfield radio station on Sundays at 1 p.m., still has a loyal following 60 years after debuting. He selects his own music, brings his own CDs and records, and even writes his own script, though his niece Margaret has been helping him out in recent years.

“I believe it helps to bring happiness to others,” Gentry said. “I have had a lot of good responses from others when I am in the supermarket and run into people, you know.”

Gentry said his show helps keep the music of his generation alive.

“I play quite a variety of music, but no hard rock, though,” he said.

He inspires not only his listeners, but those who work with him on a regular basis.

Just to be able to sit in the studio with him once a week, with someone with the experience Joe has, is phenomenal.

“Just to be able to sit in the studio with him once a week, with someone with the experience Joe has, is phenomenal,” said Duke Dance, the show’s engineer.

Joe will turn 98 in July, but despite his age he said he has no plans to retire.

“I believe take that word ‘retirement’ out of your dictionary,” he said.

Doug Barton, station owner, had high praise for Gentry’s work as well.

“Joe is an icon, not only on the radio, but on the streets of Richfield,” Barton said.
