PROVO — As Tyler Haws continues to scorch nets, he is quickly approaching setting the all-time scoring record in school history. With that in mind, what is Tyler Haws’ legacy? Here are two legacies and a potential third that Haws will leave the program.

Scorer

First and foremost, Tyler Haws is a scoring machine on the college level. He can do it in a variety of ways. He can drive, he has a terrific midrange jumper and he has extended his range to the 3-point line. He’s also automatic from the free-throw line. For his career, he’s averaging over 19 points a game while shooting 47 percent from the field, 38 percent from the 3-point line and an incredible 88.7 percent from the free-throw line. It may be a long time before anyone comes near his scoring record again.

Consistent

Throughout his career, Haws has been remarkably consistent and has improved each season. After a strong freshman campaign on a team where Jackson Emery and Jimmer Fredette were the stars, Haws has averaged 21.7, 23.2 and 22.2 points per game. His consistent outpouring of buckets is even more impressive when it’s taken into consideration that he has been the focal point of other teams’ defenses. There are few, if any, players in college basketball that are in as good of shape as Haws is, which has enabled him to get open even when he is being double-teamed.

A winner?

The one potential knock on Haws is that the Cougars have not had as much success with him as the star of the team as they did with Fredette and Danny Ainge, the two previous top scorers in the school’s history. Aside from being on the Fredette team that won a game in the NCAA tourney, Haws has limited postseason success. Two years ago, the team was a major letdown and had to settle for the NIT. Last year, the team did not make it out of the first round of March Madness. What happens this year will probably be the barometer by which Haws will be judged as a winner or not. If the Cougars can get into the Big Dance and even knock a team off, Haws will have something to put his hat on in this field.
