OGDEN — What do you do when you are jogging and you have nowhere to put your keys or cellphone? One Ogden woman solved that problem with a product that has raised almost $60,000 on Kickstarter.

As an avid marathon runner, Brenda Brundage said she was constantly trying to figure out where to put her keys and cellphone when she went for a long run. She said she was always frustrated with the lack of pockets in her exercise clothing and she didn’t like to wear a fanny pack while running. So in 2009, Brundage began creating a design for a magnetic, lightweight wallet to hold items while exercising.

Inspired by the pouch of a kangaroo, Brundage named the product RooSport. After launching in 2012, Brundage said she was so busy selling the wallet online and at marathons and races, she quit her full-time housekeeping job at a local hospital. Brundage said the 1.5 ounce, water- resistant wallet can be worn on the waistband and has resonated with people because it’s not bulky and can be easily concealed.

“We sell (to) as many non-runners as we do to runners,” Brundage said. “Even if you are out walking your dog, a lot of exercise wear just does not have a pocket. So it’s allowing people to not have to carry their phone in their bra. It’s been really popular with guys because they typically don’t like to wear the fanny pack.”

Brundage started a Kickstarter account* to gain more funding for her home-based company and she said her project was funded within three days. The account now has over $57,000 with 16 days left of fundraising.

“The original RooSport was black with orange,” she said. “We did orange because we wanted it it to be versatile for men or women and we didn’t know how popular it was going to be. Our biggest request is to have colors. So, the Kickstarter page for the Roosport 2.0 is done in colors.”

Brundage said they hope to be able to open a retail store with the funding.
