SALT LAKE CITY — Two SLCPD motor officers were involved in an accident in downtown Salt Lake Thursday evening.

The SLCPD reports that both officers are in stable condition, and the driver of the vehicle was not injured.

The Salt Lake Police Department tweeted at 6:18 p.m. that two of their officers on motorcycles were in an accident at 500 S. 250 E. in Salt Lake City.

The driver of a passenger vehicle made a lane change in front of three motors officers on 500 South at about 6:10 p.m., Salt Lake detective Cody Lougy said. One officer avoided a collision, but the other two collided at 35 mph with the driver's side door.

The two officers were taken to a local hospital to be treated for abrasions and lacerations, but were expected to recover fully, Lougy said. All three officers were wearing helmets and protective jackets at the time of the collision.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured, Lougy said.

The collision is still under investigation, and it was not immediately clear why the driver didn't see the motorcycles before the lane change.

"Unfortunately, this is a common mistake that happens in motorcycle accidents and vehicle accidents," Lougy said. "A lot of people just kind of check their mirrors. But you should be looking over to your left and right and double-checking before you merge over."

More information will be posted when it's available.
