AMERICAN FORK — Residents of American Fork will have to be careful what day they water their lawn.
The City Council approved water conservation measures Tuesday to ensure the community has enough water to get through the summer.
Starting May 1, residents at odd-number addresses are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; while even-numbered addresses can use their sprinkler system Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
On Sunday, only watering dry spots is allowed for all residents.
Watering is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Gary Smith, from the G & L Garden Center, gave tips for residents who are worried their plants will die. He says the first thing to do is aerate your lawn.
"And then you can put some organic materials in it down the holes after its aerated like the black forest is a real good product to put in the soil and that holds in the moisture," Smith said. "Coconut choir is good too. It holds a lot more water than peat moss does so mixing it with your garden or flower beds will help to hold moisture."
Smith says that people only need to water their lawns once or twice a week during this time of year.
Those who don’t follow the water schedule will receive a written warning and a reminder of the restrictions on the first offense.
If caught violating the restrictions a second time, the person's irrigation water will be shut off, and the violator will have to pay a $100 fee to get it turned back on.
A third offense will have the same consequences as the second, except the fee will be $300 instead of $100.
Similar conservation measures implemented last July helped the city save 11 percent more water.
