SALT LAKE CITY — Start warming up in your car and singing scales in the shower — this week it’s time to shine.

The fourth week in April is designated as Karaoke Week. Born in Japan, this activity is usually associated with either extreme courage or total shamelessness. Either way, singing along to a track of your favorite songs is a great way to have fun, blow off steam and show off your amazing pipes in a casual environment.

Here are several options for celebrating yet another arbitrary holiday with great music and good friends.

Poplar Street Pub in Salt Lake has karaoke Monday night at 9 p.m., and features a full menu of gourmet pizza and burgers.

Karaoke Cafe in Murray welcomes all ages with a friendly environment for families, groups and truly dedicated karaoke-ists. Open Tuesday through Saturday, the $5 cover charge includes singing and unlimited refills on a drink of your choice.

Guru’s in Provo has karaoke to help you digest their delicious sweet potato fries on Saturday nights from 8-11 p.m.

Along with a good venue, you also need to find a good song to belt out to impress your friends. Whether it's an oldie or the newest hit, a good song can go a long way in the karaoke world. Here are a few suggestions:

Something Old — Choose something from your childhood, whenever that may be:

If you grew up in the 00’s, and are a dreaded Millennial:

"I Want It That Way" - Backstreet Boys

"Baby One More Time" - Britney Spears

"No Scrubs" - TLC

"I Want You" - Savage Garden

Here are a few songs for the grunge kids:

"Zombie" - Cranberries

"Only Wanna Be With You" - Hootie and the Blowfish

"No Rain" - Blind Melon

"Wannabe" - The Spice Girls

For the Regan-era karaoke singers:

"Footloose" - Kenny Loggins

"Holiday" - Madonna

"You Make My Dreams Come True" - Hall and Oates

"Jesse’s Girl" - Rick Springfield

Something New — Sing one of these hits to get everyone to join in:

"Top of the World"- Imagine Dragons

"Roar" - Katy Perry

"Royals" - Lorde

"I Knew You Were Trouble" - Taylor Swift

Something Borrowed

Choosing a British Invasion band will always get you a fair bit of applause be it The Beatles, or The Spice Girls, or One Direction if you’re down with the kids (and this writer).

Something Blue

Anything made famous by Joni Mitchell

"One That Got Away" - The Civil Wars

"Thieves" - She & Him

Avoid singing something written for someone with the vocal range of an angel (Adele, Whitney Huston, Celine Dion) and for the love of karaoke, don’t sing “American Pie.”
