SALT LAKE CITY — The unsung hero behind football Hall of Famer Steve Young’s rise to greatness, a mission homecoming for pop singer David Archuleta, a perspective of the Holy Land and real women displaying faith in the face of life’s most difficult situations — all are part of KSL-TV’s special programming this weekend.

Here is a schedule and synopsis of each show. Programs can be viewed locally on KSL channel 5 and via live streaming at live.ksl.com.

9 p.m. — Catching the Brass Ring: Over the years, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has performed with many notable guest artists and conductors. From Alfie Boe to Tom Brokaw, relive some of the most memorable moments of guest performances with the most famous choir in America.

9:30 p.m. — Music and the Spoken Word: A Week in the Life: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s weekly broadcast, “Music and the Spoken Word,” has been a phenomenon of broadcasting — at nearly 85 years, the longest-continuous broadcast. See what it takes to put on the weekly broadcast in a behind-the-scenes look of a week in the life of “Music and the Spoken Word.” Saturday, April 5, 2014

9:30 a.m. — History of the Saints: Lucy Mack Smith: She has been called the First Mother of the Restoration and it is a noble title aptly deserved. This is the beginning of the story of mother Lucy Mack Smith, the story of a life well-lived.

Noon — LDS Church World Report: “The World Report is a semiannual report of news events around the world pertaining to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

1 p.m. — Finding Forgiveness: The lives of two families changed forever following a terrible crash that left one mother dead and a young father in prison. See the emotional journey of two families — the children of the crash victim, and the wife of the driver responsible — in the Emmy-award-winning story, “Finding Forgiveness.” How they found hope, healing and ultimately freedom by finding forgiveness.

1:30 p.m. — Scriptures Legacy: What if Moroni had met his demise before he could hide up the plates of gold that he had dedicated his life to preserving? What if William Tyndale’s Bible translations were destroyed by King Henry VIII? Throughout history, ancient and modern prophets and disciples made significant sacrifices, even with their lives, to provide the scriptures we have today. These scriptures take us to significant events we did not experience in person. They are a touchstone of measuring correctness and truth, for teaching us selflessness and charity, strengthening our faith and lighting our path. 4 p.m. — Grit: The True Story of Steve Young: Steve Young will always be remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. But what most people don’t know is that he attributes much of his success to the man who taught him how to work hard and never quit. That man is his father, Grit. Hear the true story behind Steve Young’s rise to greatest and how the relationship with his father made a difference.

Becoming popular is no easy feat. A new study finds that a kid trying to improve his social status in school also increases the risk they'll be harassed by peers. The higher they climb the school social ladder, the greater the risk they'll be bullied. Dave McCann discussed the study with lead author Robert Faris.

The neuroscience of spirituality and religion is almost completely unknown. But, as Carole Mikita reports, researchers at the University of Utah are trying to understand how religious experience shapes the brain.

Noon — Jerusalem: Link to the Past — Hope of the Future: KSL religion specialist Carole Mikita travels to Jerusalem to share the stories behind the Dead Sea Scrolls, the BYU Jerusalem center and how this holy land is a link to the past that provides hope for the future.

1 p.m. — Real Women. Real Faith: Follow the stories of five women as they confront the challenges of life. From depression to divorce to the death of a loved one, see how these women rely on their faith during times of trial.

1:30 p.m. — David Archuleta: Called to Serve: From American Idol to Mormon missionary, pop singer David Archuleta has come a long way. He shocked fans two years ago when he decided to put his career on hold to serve a mission for the LDS Church. KSL takes you to the streets of Chile to experience how the mission changed Archuleta’s life. Hear his plans for the future, now that he is home. 4 p.m. — One on One with Dave McCann: Managing time when there is so little of it, having courage and conviction, bouncing back and the importance of listening to mom: KSL’s Dave McCann tackles those topics in revealing, one-on-one interviews with NFL prospects Kyle Van Noy and Spencer Hadley, Neon Trees drummer Elaine Bradley and Philadelphia news anchor Vai Sikahema.
