DENVER (AP) — Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall is about even with his Republican challenger in a new poll.
Thursday's Quinnipiac (KWIN'-ih-pee-ak) University poll shows Udall with support from 45 percent of voters, versus Rep. Cory Gardner's 44 percent. That's within the poll's error margin of 2.7 percentage points.
The poll says the candidates are almost tied among independent voters and have the support of 9 out of 10 members of their respective political parties.
The survey suggests Udall is hurt by Coloradans' sour view of President Barack Obama, who's seen unfavorably by 59 percent of voters. Gardner leads among voters who think the economy or health care is the top issue.
Colorado's U.S. Senate race is expected to be one of the most expensive in the nation. Republicans need to gain six seats to win back the chamber.
