WILLARD — “Boat early and boat often” may be the motto on the Great Salt Lake this year.

Water levels match those of a year ago, but poor precipitation totals this year are cause for concern.

“It does bring out hazards that we don’t have in high-water season,” Willard Bay State Park Director James Morgan said. “We’ll probably have a shorter (recreation) season if we can’t keep the water coming in.”

That could be shorter by a month. But Morgan reports boating was great through July of last year.

He hopes for rain in Utah’s “rainy season,” and northern Utah got some on Monday.

Morgan says levels are good enough for boaters now, if they slow down and keep safe distances from the shore.

And not all fun at Willard Bay must be related to boating, he pointed out.

“There’s still shore fishing, there’s plenty of camping,” Morgan said. “And we have other activities to do as well, including a great nature trail.”
