CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — David Thompson, the NCAA leader in RBIs, drove in three more runs and Miami beat Florida International 6-2 in the first round of the Coral Gables Regional on Friday night.
The host Hurricanes (45-14) scored six runs in the first two innings against Andres Nunez (6-6) to seize control of the first matchup between the cross-town rivals since 2008.
Miami took a 4-0 lead in the first against FIU (29-30) on two hits and two errors. After Ricky Eusebio scored on a throwing error, Thompson smacked a two-run double for a 3-0 lead. He later scored on Willie Abreu's groundout.
George Iskenderian's sacrifice fly in the second padded the lead. Thompson, who entered with 80 RBIs, hit a run-scoring single to tie Mike Fiore for the fourth-most in Hurricanes history.
Andrew Suarez (8-1) allowed two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in seven-plus innings for Miami.
