ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Reliever Grant Balfour has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays.
The decision was announced after the Rays' 9-0 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday night. Balfour allowed three runs, one hit and three walks in two-thirds of an inning, including Chris Young's grand slam.
Tampa Bay selected the contract of right-hander Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.
