BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech has received a record 22,500 applications this year.
The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1AAuy16) reports that the applications top the 20,897 received last year.
First-year enrollment for the coming academic year is straining on-campus housing on the Blacksburg campus. That means more students are likely to be funneled into rentals in town.
At the request of university officials, the General Assembly approved $1.6 million to add 150 in-state students to this year's freshman class.
Freshman class enrollment has been fewer than 5,500 students in recent years. This year's planned increase would have put the class of 2019 at about 5,900.
But spokesman Larry Hincker said more students accepted and fewer have been dropping off to attend other schools. That means the freshman class will likely top 6,000.
