WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — Bears were spotted at two Letcher County schools this week.
Arlie Boggs Elementary School Principal Freddie Terry told WYMT-TV (http://bit.ly/1KuNvSI ) that a mother bear and three cubs have been frequenting the school dumpsters there.
Terry said he requires teachers to carry walkie-talkies so they can call the office if they spot a bear. Teachers also carry air horns they can blow to frighten the bears away.
Staff tells the children if they see a bear to make noise and try to appear bigger than they are.
Fleming Neon Middle School Principal Gracie Maggard said they saw a bear at school for the first time recently.
Maggard said keeping the children safe is the top priority. She called the encounter "a little exciting".
