CINCINNATI (AP) — An internal audit shows employees at Cincinnati's pioneering performing arts school had one-on-one access to students but didn't have valid background checks.

The audit released Thursday says 20 of 28 supplemental staff members at the School for Creative and Performing Arts didn't have background checks even though artistic director Isidore Rudnick had said they did.

Principal Steve Brokamp says some background checks were still in process in the fall, but all staff members were eventually cleared to work with students.

Brokamp and Rudnick were reassigned to new positions earlier this month.

The audit also found issues with certain hiring decisions, spending and billing policies, and money collection from ticket sales.

The school has been under scrutiny since its independent fundraising arm disbanded after falling victim to a Ponzi scheme.
