BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore's mayor has been lamenting Monday's violence as she tours some of the city's damaged neighborhoods.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says it's "extremely heartbreaking for someone born and raised in Baltimore." She says it's tough to see "a group of criminals go through our city with an intent to destroy," and asks "What does it solve?"

The fires and riots started hours after the funeral for Freddie Gray, who died of a injury suffered while in police custody.

Attorney Billy Murphy says Gray's family has been shocked by the violence and was lying low Monday evening. He says they are calling for calm and hope to organize a peace march later in the week.

Gray's fatal encounter with officers came amid a national debate over police use of force, especially when black suspects are involved. Gray was African-American.
