CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Four men are facing multiple charges after the early-morning shooting of a student on the campus of a small, private university in Charlotte.
Police say the suspects visited Johnson C. Smith University around 1 a.m. Sunday planning to attend a party, but they weren't admitted since they're not students. Campus officials say the young men returned to the school about an hour later and began firing randomly into the air.
University President Ronald Carter said an unnamed male student was shot while sitting in a car. The school says the student was an innocent bystander and wasn't targeted.
The school was locked down with students encouraged to stay in their dorm rooms for about five hours.
Johnson C. Smith is a historically black, liberal arts university with about 1,600 students.
