RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police say an 11-year-old boy is being treated for serious head injuries after he fell off the side of a moving vehicle in Carson City.

Authorities say it appears the boy was standing on the running boards of an SUV driven by a relative as the driver left a family gathering about noon on Sunday.

The child was thrown off the car about 75 yards from his home and hit his head on the pavement.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies say the driver left the scene, but returned after deputies called on the phone.

Police say the child was flown to a Reno hospital with life-threatening injuries.
