PHOENIX (AP) — A man shot and killed in a confrontation with burglars inside his Phoenix home was a church pastor known for helping former prison inmates and the homeless.

People who knew 53-year-old John "Jack" Moriarty, or "Pastor Jack," were in mourning at Redeemed Outreach Center, the downtown Phoenix church where Moriarty was senior pastor.

Phoenix police say Moriarty was killed Friday night at his house near Monroe Street and 20th Avenue.

Police Sgt. Jonathan Howard says two suspects got into confrontations with Moriarty and another male resident. The male resident suffered minor injuries.

One suspect is described as white, in his 40s, about 5-foot-8 with stringy brown hair and a stocky build.

The other is described as black, between 20 and 40 years old, about 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds.
