BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — The Beaufort County Council has voted to eliminate health insurance coverage for 95 retirees and 590 workers now on the payroll who would have been eligible when they retire.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1xLqmKn) that deputy county administrator Josh Gruber says another 10 Bluffton Township Fire District retirees lost coverage as will another about 95 current fire district workers.

Gruber says the county and fire district won't let retirees pay the full tab of their premiums because they can obtain the same or similar coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

He says the county pays about $380,000 annually for contributions to health care premiums of about 95 retirees. Those retirees pay another $323,000. Gruber says extending the benefit to the 590 other workers would be too expensive.
