SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Senators have voted to move forward on a proposal that would increase Utah's gas tax by 10 cents per gallon.

Lawmakers voted 19-6 on Thursday to keep the tax increase under consideration. The proposal will require a final vote from the Senate before being sent to the House.

Several senators praised bill sponsor Sen. Kevin Van Tassell, a Vernal Republican, and called his proposal courageous.

Although increasing taxes is always unpopular, said Woods Cross Republican Todd Weiler, it is necessary in this case. He called the current transportation funding system an unsustainable paradigm.

The money raised by the tax increase would go to the Department of Transportation to fund repairs on small roads and the replacement of aging bridges.
