Officials schedule news conference to give updates about new Catholic high school in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The Diocese of Springfield's superintendent of schools and other officials are holding a news conference to update parents and the public about a new Catholic high school being built in the diocese.

Pope Francis High School is a merger of Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic high schools. It is being built on the former site of Cathedral in Springfield. That building was made unusable by a tornado in 2011.

Andrea Ciszewski, the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools, the executive director of the new school and the two principals planned a news conference on Tuesday to discuss a decision to have students from both schools attend classes in Chicopee next fall while waiting for the new school to be completed.

The original plan called for Cathedral students to continue attending classes at a rented facility in Wilbraham, but the diocese says "projected enrollments ... at the Wilbraham site have not materialized."
